The source of Perla Moldovei (Moldavian Pearl) is located in Siret river valley, sculpted in sarmato-pliocene layers on the eastern slopes of Oriental Carpathian Mountains and on West-South-Western side of Moldavian Plateau. Perla Moldovei comes from an aquifer opened by a 210 meters depth drilling where the underground source is completely isolated from exterior by a 40 meters waterproof clay layer, situated between 140 and 180 meters depth. Perla Moldovei distinguishes itself through a unique combination of characteristics: high natural pH (8,8 – 9,0), high total alkalinity (250 mg/l), low TDS (333 mg/l), very low hardness (below 0.5 German degrees), undetectable nitrite. Based on chemical composition of bottled waters published in Geochemistry of European Bottled Waters (Reimann and Birke, 2010), Perla Moldovei is probably the only still oligo-mineral water in Europe having a pH above 8.5 and a total alkalinity above 160mg/l.

The source was established in 1986 at the winery of Sascut build in 1957 and having a total capacity of 25 million liters, situated in a significant vineyard area on the Moldavian Plateau. For about 20 years it was used as the main water-source for the winery. In 2004 the winery was bought by the current owner which invested a part of wine revenues in the development of a water production line. For 10 years all investments in water bottling facilities were supported by the wine sales. The unique combination of characteristics of Perla Moldovei proved in short time that the water itself was more precious than the wine and in 2015 the producer completely gave up wine production. Perla Moldovei is TradeMark registered and is well known among consumers who are interested in a healthy lifestyle.
