The water got its name from the fairy Theoni, who, according to the local legend, protects the Goura spring. The old inhabitants of the area tell stories about the sweet fairy who guards the spring, the most beautiful of the daughters of Pinios, the famous Naiades, the little, smiling, and humble Theon. In Greek mythology, the Naiads are a type of female spirit, or nymph, presiding over fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks, and other bodies of freshwater.
According to legend, when the fairy heard the shepherds' flute's melodic sound, the locals could see her dancing and singing. The fairy sprinkled with the "magic" water of the spring shepherds and hikers, taking their sorrows and giving them magical gifts.
