Today about three thousand brands of bottled water are available around the world. The growing trend has generated a large demand, and almost every day a new bottled water brand or company is born.
In the United States, where bottled water has a less-developed history, several factors are responsible. Most Americans have had access to safe drinking water since the early twentieth century, when municipal supplies began to be disinfected. Chlorination went a long way toward stopping waterborne diseases, and as the population replaced bottled water with tap water, the bottled water industry was devastated. But the public tends to view municipal water supplies negatively, and indeed some areas have suffered from poorer quality in recent decades. This has encouraged the bottled water trend, as have pushes for healthy living and successful marketing by water companies. Bottled water is in style, and its American sales have increased from about $50 million in 1960 to about $5 billion in 2000.
Bottled Water Lifestyle
There have been a number of social and economic factors that have continued to drive the bottled water market forward. These include the acceptance of `buying water', with drinking bottled water becoming a more mainstream activity, in the late 1980s and through today, compared to being viewed more as exclusive or trendy, prior to that time. Additionally, changes in work and lifestyles have benefited the market and the acceptance of bottled water.
